From ‘Unloved’ to ‘Off the Hook’ – The story of a special build SV650.
Through a twist of fate, an unloved first generation SV650 arrived in our possession. Making use of a strong low-mileage engine, we concocted a plan to ditch the budget parts and give this little bike a unique, superbike spec rebuild.
The transformation begins.
First job was to arrange a host of new and replacement parts. We chose a GSXR750 USD front end set-up with yokes, wheel, spindle and discs, grafted on with a custom headrace bearing to accommodate the new forks. We ditched the stock 6-pot calipers in favour of GSXR600 Tokico 4-Pots. New bearings and seals were used throughout the build, complimented by bendix sintered pads and custom braided lines. Finishing off the front we installed a Ducati 999 carbon front mudguard and stunning EBC discs.
While the engine was removed, a ZX6R Showa rear shock was sourced, serviced and fitted allowing for full suspension adjustment. To get the look just right, a handmade rear subframe was made, including a custom undertray to accommodate the electrics. The subframe was built to fit a seat from a donor Ducati S4R which was itself recovered in distressed brown suede effect material.
Work on the front end continued, adding Renthal black bars, machined risers, Oberon black billet LED indicators, a new Halo LED front headlght and digital Acewell clock. The tank was treated to a custom keyless cap and beautiful ivory paint to compliment the tan seat and Biltwell grips.
The frame, swingarm, subframe, wheels and a host of other parts went off for powder coating in satin black. Naturally, new bearings and seals were again used in rebuild. A Tsubaki / renthal 520 drivetrain conversion was chosen, -1 f / +2 at the rear.
Getting her up on her wheels.
The rebuild went pretty smoothly, and as everything came together, the end result was in sight.
The final result – a thing of beauty, and performance.
The bike was sold to it’s new owner before completion, and as such, the lads were under some pressure to get her ready.
We’re sure you’ll agree, she looks the part and the feedback from her new owner certainly said it all “Wow! She’s Fast too!”
